Building momentum and commercial direction for Ross Innovation
Bridging the gap between innovation and market opportunity
Philip Ross Norman is the Managing Director of Ross Innovation, a business developing advanced robotics technology with applications across sectors including nuclear, aerospace and defence. With strong technical progress already in place, the focus was on turning innovation into commercial opportunity.
While the technology was well developed, building consistent business development activity proved challenging.
“As a founder-led business, outreach activity was constrained by time and access to established networks, which limited the ability to follow up leads, open new conversations and maintain momentum with prospective partners.”
Through the Cumbria Accelerator programme, Philip worked with his advisor to strengthen the commercial pathway for the business, improving access to networks, identifying relevant opportunities, and creating a more structured approach to market engagement.
Focus was placed on three key priorities:
- Strengthening access to relevant networks and industry contacts
- Developing a clearer understanding of the regional landscape and opportunities
- Creating a more structured and proactive approach to business development
Building a clear commercial pathway
Support from Cumbria Accelerator helped open new routes into key organisations and create more consistent engagement across target sectors.
This included building connections with potential collaborators, accessing higher-value industry forums, and identifying realistic funding and pilot opportunities aligned with the business.
The approach was straightforward and practical, helping to translate technical progress into meaningful commercial conversations while maintaining momentum over time.
A proactive approach to business development
Since receiving support, Ross Innovation has shifted from reactive outreach to a more structured, proactive approach to business development. This has led to an increase in active opportunities, new organisational connections, and engagement at industry level, including presenting at a recent AWE event.
“The most valuable aspect has been the consistent support and follow-through, which has helped maintain momentum and open new opportunities.”
While still early in the commercial journey, there is now a clearer pathway to market and growing engagement across key sectors. With a stronger pipeline and more defined direction, the business is better positioned to progress opportunities alongside ongoing technical development.
“It’s encouraging to have more structure and momentum around business development, alongside a clearer pathway for moving forward.”
